Kidney Transplantation
Our kidney transplant program, started in 1971, is one of the oldest in New England and has a long history of successful kidney transplantation. We perform more than 100 kidney transplants per year. We have considerable experience with hand-assisted laparoscopic donor nephrectomy, which has made live kidney donation much easier. Our survival rate continues to surpass national averages. Most transplant candidates are referred to the program by their primary physician. Many also enter at their own initiative.

Hand-assisted laparoscopic donor nephrectomy coupled with donor evaluation using MRA/MRI has improved the traditional experiences of donor and recipient. In the past, open donor nephrectomy required longer hospitalization for the donor and a more difficult recovery time. Now the donor evaluation and recovery is far easier. Typically, the donor is able to be discharged home in 3 days and is ambulatory with minimal wound discomfort. As of April 13, 2006, Dr. David Hull has performed over 200 Laparoscopic hand assisted live kidney donor nephrectomies.
