Jefferson House
In 1873, government officials decided it was time to do something about the indigent and the elderly in Connecticut. And so, through a special act, the General Assembly created the Old People's Home on Jefferson Street in Hartford. It offered an attractive alternative to the County Poorhouse.

In 1954, the Old People's Home became Jefferson House, a facility devoted to the care of the elderly. Later, the Jefferson House building became Hartford Hospital's Nursing School. In 1980, Jefferson House moved to its present location in Newington, providing professional and individualized care and meeting the medical, social, spiritual and personal needs of its elderly residents.

Jefferson House would also become the nucleus of what is now the
hospital's Newington Campus: Jefferson House; Curtis Building (the old Newington Children's Hospital, converted to house Hartford Hospital's Budget, Accounting and Payroll departments); Clinical Lab Partners (the second-largest laboratory in Connecticut, serving Hartford Hospital, Connecticut Children's Medical Center and MidState Medical Center); and Cedar Mountain Commons, an assisted living community.

Cedar Mountain Commons
Cedar Mountain Commons is a rental community that emphasizes resident independence and a warm inviting atmosphere.

The attractive, homey facility is located at the very base of Cedar Mountain and contains an elegant dining area, a library, a computer room, a country kitchen, a fitness room and a beauty salon/barber shop.

The monthly fee includes living quarters (studios, one- and two-bedroom apartments), community amenities, utilities, weekly housekeeping, maintenance, scheduled transportation, dining and a variety of social, educational and cultural activities.

While Jefferson House provides predominately long-term care for the elderly, Cedar Mountain Commons offers seniors a vibrant and active lifestyle in a new community.
