Community Involvement
|
|

|
Hartford Hospital works as a partner with many organizations to develop initiatives for healthier communities and to enhance local economic development.
This involvement can range from collaboration with health and social service planning bodies to identifying opportunities where hospital expertise and leadership in healthcare delivery enhance the programming of civic organizations. Through community involvement, the hospital encourages associations with other agencies and corporations to positively affect the lives of others.

Recently, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals awarded Hartford Hospital’s Cancer Program a $25,000 educational grant for outreach. As a result, the hospital, the Urban League, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals and the Alpha Kappa Psi Fraternity began collaborating to provide information and screenings for early cancer detection. This grant is designed to support cancer education and screenings within high-risk African-American, West Indian and Hispanic communities and provide equal access to quality care.
“The financial support from Pfizer further enhances our community involvement and dedication to reach those who may not otherwise receive these services,” said David Polk, Vice President for Business Development and Community Relations. “We appreciate Pfizer’s willingness to collaborate with us.” Together, the partners have participated in numerous events including a golf tournament, health fair, Black History Celebration and annual fundraising gala.
Another major partnership is the Connecticut Center of Excellence for Eliminating Health Disparities Among Latinos (CEEHDL). Hartford Hospital, the Hispanic Health Council (HHC) and the University of Connecticut joined forces to establish the CEEHDL. With a five-year grant from the NIH National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities, the partnership will combine research, education and training and community outreach to develop the capacity of health professionals and researchers to address health concerns.
The hospital partners with many organizations, including the City of Hartford Health Department, the State Department of Public Health, the United Way of the Capital Area, Community Health Services and the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center.
As a member of the Southside Institutions Neighborhood Alliance (SINA), the hospital has collaborated with neighborhood organizations and city and state officials to improve housing and living conditions in the south end of Hartford. “Hartford Hospital’s steady leadership and commitment to our mission has helped to foster both the physical and economic foundation of this community,” says Luis Caban, Executive Director of SINA. Hartford Hospital has been critical to the success of the Cityscape Homes Initiative, by providing acquisition funds and construction financing.
The hospital continues to develop relationships with places of worship, senior centers, shelters, schools and corporations — organizations whose missions mirror its own.
Additionally, Hartford Hospital plays an active role in contributing to the community in partnership with other hospitals, organizations and charitable agencies. Members of the hospital workforce at all levels serve as trustees or committee members of outside groups to assist in providing services or expertise on health-related issues. The hospital is also active in neighborhood beautification projects.
